[Background] In this particular version of Alice in Wonderland, Wonderland is a violent war ground in the midst of a triangular three-way fight between the inhabitants of Heart Castle, the Mafia, and the inhabitants of an amusement park. It’s nothing new to the people who live there – it seems to have been going on a long time and the people have grown quite accustomed to it; possessing an arsenal of weapons and even generally keeping them on hand – and when they don’t? They turn objects of their trade into weapons without so much as blinking. Besides being at war, there’s another reason for the great deal of weaponry used by citizens of Wonderland.
The citizens of Wonderland have little regard for the value of life. Stemming from the world’s system of roles and the idea that they can all be replaced, most of the people, with or without duties, have very little sense of self-preservation. Even those who loathe the system don’t keep themselves any safer.
The core of this system revolves around clocks – which are the mechanisms the people of Wonderland have in place of hearts. When they die, their clocks are left behind; broken, to be fixed. However, once fixed, they take on a completely different personality and their memories are wiped clean. But if the clock is completely destroyed – it cannot be reused; which is why some would try to destroy the clocks before they could be collected, to effectively kill the person before they are replaced. Though it’s a crime, many people feel strongly about it and try it anyway. And some of them die trying.
Julius is one of the ‘ones with duties’. He has a prescribed role in Wonderland, unlike the faceless people with no presences. He is the clockmaker who lives in the clock tower. As one who fills a role, his life begins at a point that fits the role – approximately twenty eight and he would stop aging at a certain point as well (around thirty-one, as fits his role). The history of Wonderland inhabitants is weird and hard to pinpoint. His life is his work – he spends almost all of his time holed up in the tower working on clocks gathered for him by Ace or the afterimages. He leaves only on business or when required of him, and had very little connections to others prior to Alice’s arrival.
It’s noted that he earned the respect of the amusement park owner, Mary Gowland, by simple fact that he is not amused by the joke others make of the man’s name. He also has an odd friendship with Ace, though he hardly acts like it. Bonds are unusual in Wonderland. But prior to Alice’s arrival he was very apathetic to it all, and very pointed about keeping people out of his tower, even to the point of getting angry as he told them to leave; Which is exactly what he did when he found Alice in his tower unexpectedly at the beginning of the story.
Alice was an outsider dragged into Wonderland by Peter White – a feat made possible by Nightmare. Peter had her drink a small vial which forced her to play the “game” and made it impossible for her to go home until the vial was filled again. The vial would be filled the more she interacted with the inhabitants of Wonderland. When he realized her predicament, he was annoyed, but offered her assistance. For the sake of his reputation, he allows her to stay in the Clock tower. He also describes to her the current state of Wonderland – war torn between three territories. Because of the constant fighting, he warned her that it is a very dangerous world to go wandering around in. But he also advised her that as long as she remained in the Clock Tower Plaza, the neutral area, she would be protected.
When she first came, there were a lot of things Julius didn’t bother telling her, including the true nature of his work. At first, it was because he felt she had no need to know, being an Outsider. And later, it was because he didn’t want to upset her – worrying that it would frighten her. While he refuses to tell her, or let her help with his work, she begins to piece things together from her experiences outside the Clock Tower as well as little hints from Ace. When she questions Julius again, he tells her the truth – that their hearts are simply clocks, and that he is the Mortician of their world. The Afterimages are shadow-like creatures that come to take away the clocks of those who have died and assist Julius in his work, as does Ace; who stops those who attempt to destroy the broken clocks. To destroy them is a huge crime in Wonderland; something that people do to prevent the clocks from being fixed and their friends from being reborn into new lives.
His days during Alice’s stay don’t change much – they are still filled with work. But he changes. He becomes closer and closer to her, while enjoying her company and having her to make coffee for him, but other than the little things, his routine doesn’t change. He begins to take more notice to the number of clocks he receives, actually starting to worry about the number – saying it’s ‘too much’, signifying that he starts to take the value of life more seriously.
At a later point, he is confronted by Blood Dupre, who none too kindly requests Alice move in with him. Julius, rather than simply allowing Blood to take her away, defends what is her best interest and also her will to choose where she wishes to live of her own free will. When Blood made to attack him, he defended himself, but neither were hurt, as Ace intervened before a real fight could break out. However, Julius took the confrontation to heart and later went to Alice about it. He told her what happened and thinking she would be happier elsewhere, pushed her to leave, despite that being the last thing he wanted and instead made her believe he wanted her gone. Still, she stood up to him and voiced her desire to stay with him. The emotional outburst confused him and left him speechless; showing how poorly he handles such situations. He hugs her (rather tightly, to the point that she says it hurts), wanting her to stop crying, which he truly can’t handle.
The bottle continues to fill and amongst everything else, Alice is invited to Heart Castle for a Ball – one that is mandatory for all those with duties in Wonderland. Though she decided she would rather not go and tried to use her lack of wardrobe as an excuse to stay home, Julius declared that if he was required to suffer through it he would drag her down with him and procured a suitable dress for her. So Alice, Julius and Ace travelled together to the castle – letting Ace lead for a while, before giving up and making their way to the castle.
His previous stay in Somarium lasted quite a while – it got him out more often (as much as he hated it and will still hate it). It’s still incredibly rare for him to choose to go out on his own if he doesn’t have to, and while he made other friends, he was still equally awkward around strangers. Due to the number of people he got to speak to over that time, he became more knowledgeable about people and more accepting of different or even strange types of people. Time made it easier to use the network, even if he still only used it and would use it if he had something important to say… purposely anyway. He was introduced to good, bad and in-between and it made him more and more cautious and protective of the people around him.
[Personality] Wonderland is full of all types but they all share one common thread; the reality that their lives are inconsequential. Whether they are ‘Those With Duties’ or those without, they can easily be replaced if something were to happen to them. While there are many different feelings about that truth, all acknowledge that. Julius is no different. His feelings on the matter were, for the longest time, without question. His job was simply to fix the broken clocks that came into his office. Before Alice came to Wonderland, and shortly after he did, we see that he is a man of few words, who is curt and strict. Because of his job as the Clockmaker, he is naturally withdrawn from the rest of Wonderland. Most of them see him as a killer; an icon of the part of their reality that they hate the most – clocks. He is distant and cold and completely devoted to his work. Other than his best friend Ace, he keeps all the other inhabitants of Wonderland at a distance to some extent, both because of his job, and because of his own personal preference.
Above and beyond his workaholic nature, he is also known for his status as a hermit. His home is the only neutral space, and he is happy if he never has to leave it. For that, he is glad to have assistance with his work. However, he is happiest when left to his work on his own. He tends to take an aggressive stance when other people enter his home, especially unwelcomed. Which, as he keeps to himself most of the time and would not lightly invite anyone in, unwelcomed is how it usually happens. He hates crowds and social gatherings, and even friendly visits seem, to him, like a distraction, rather than a welcome reprieve.
Julius is often seen wearing a rather dead-pan and gloomy expression. He isn’t very good at showing or conveying his emotions. Before Alice came, there were many things he did not consider… about himself, about his feelings, about the world around him, and about the people around him as well. It’s clear that her presence changes him. Living with her, he slowly begins to see her as a sister-figure. He begins to question his work, and before she became aware of what he did, he begins to question it – showing a concern for what she would think of him once she knew the truth. The things he once thought nothing of, he began to think about in great detail. He began to question his best friend’s tactics in gathering so many clocks and killing the people who interfered. With that, there was a silent appreciation of life that began to grow. Even if he didn’t speak openly of it, she made him feel more strongly about his work and the value of people’s lives within their world.
He becomes more serious about his work. While she shows him the bright side of his duty, he also begins to hate it. It begins to truly sadden him to see so many broken clocks brought to him. He hates the way people treat them so poorly despite all the work he puts into fixing them. With Alice’s influence, he begins to see that their lives aren’t as insignificant as some treat them.
The longer Alice is with him, the more protective he becomes. He sees himself as something of a Guardian to her. He hates to see her cry, although he’s horrible at dealing with emotional situations. He tries not to show his vulnerability, although he becomes more and more open the longer he’s exposed to her. He does his best to advise her and keep her out of harm’s way. And while he does not support violence or senseless killing, because of the world he lives in, he has learned to use a gun in his own protection, although he hesitates to actually shoot, even in his own protection. In dangerous situations, he’s more likely to turn to Ace for his assistance and protection than to fight. He likes to remain neutral in all things when he can. And as such, he rarely connects to people, but when he does, those connections are rare and precious to him, even if he shows it rather poorly.
[Specialties/Abilities] Julius knows how to operate a gun (and apparently turns his work tools into them, as many people do in Wonderland with different objects they carry with them), although he is loath to do so and hesitant to actually use it. He also knows a certain amount of mechanics, from his work as a Clockmaker doing so many repairs. However, other than that, he is a fairly normal human, save for the fact that he has a clock in his chest instead of a beating heart.
[Affection] ...no matter what kind of affection it is, it's going to be awkward. He'll begrudgingly accept hugs and the like, though if you get a hug from him it will likely be awkwardly painful.
[Fighting] Sure but they won't get much of a fight out of him. He'll shoot if he has to but he won't do it unless he feels it's really necessary.
